A few FAQs

Whatever your style, trust KitchenAid with that small moment of peace that an espresso brings. It’s that moment after you wake, before the day rushes in, when the sun rises above your kitchen table and all you can hear is the quiet hum of your coffee machine. The perfect espresso warms your hands. Now that’s living.

What is the difference between an automatic and semi-automatic espresso machine?

An automatic espresso machine handles most of the brewing process with just the push of a button, including grinding, tamping, and milk frothing. A semi-automatic machine, on the other hand, gives you more control. You need to grind coffee manually, tamp the ground coffee into the portafilter basket and sometimes froth your milk using the steamer. While more involved, it allows for more personalisation and creativity in making your coffee. Learn more about espresso coffee at home.

Is tap water okay for my espresso machine in Australia?

Yes, you can use tap water in your KitchenAid espresso machine. In fact, we recommend you do. Your espresso machine has a premium-quality filter that will do what’s needed, provided you follow the instructions to replace the water filter when necessary. We do not recommend using distilled or mineral water—both can damage your machine. Simply fill the tank with tap water and replace the filter as needed.

What are the best beans for espresso machines?

Generally, we recommend dark roast beans for espresso as they deliver a rich and full-bodied flavour—pairing well with milk-based drinks like lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites (the old faithful of Aussie coffee culture). But you can also use light and medium roasts if you prefer a brighter, fruitier taste. The most important thing is to use freshly ground, whole beans instead of pre-ground coffee.

It’s a joy to try different beans. And our KitchenAid espresso machines make that easy. Simply twist and lift to easily remove your bean hopper to empty, exchange or refill your favourite beans. Learn more about espresso with our guide to espresso vs coffee and what is espresso?
